Z E R O C I R C L E S
An Ongoing National Environmental Art Project
to Help End the Destruction of Public Lands.

A ZeroCircle Is a circular form built from found materials and left upon the land to function as Earth healing "medicine"; a hand-made expression of hope; a symbol of our trust in the Mystery. Each is a way of putting prayer into form. Every zerocircle helps ground our anger over what is happening to the ecosystems which sustain us. Ever zerocircle marks a personal commitment to fight for wild nature and help end the destruction of our public lands.

Bear Witness Circle
Chugash National Forest, Alaska 1998

Art is the oldest language and crafting circles upon the land is an ancient way of Declaring Sacred Ground, a practice which connects us to nature and helps give our lives meaning in these apocalyptic times. Art created in a sacred manner upon the ravaged and endangered regions of Earth becomes medicine for ourselves and the wild - a kind of personal and planetary acupuncture.  Art of this nature is a profound way to give thanks for the beauty which surrounds us and to activate a protective response from our culture.

From the megalithic stone rings of Britain to the medicine wheels of Native America, humans have built circles to celebrate their connection to Earth. Circles are zeros as well, and perhaps there is no better symbol to employ at the end of his-storyto mark the difficult path ahead of protecting and restoring our natural world. Zero growth, zero war, zero pollution, zero cut of our last ancient forests.  The purpose of ZeroCircles is to artfully engage Americans with the crisis in our National Forests through art which dramatizes the need to end commercial logging on OUR public lands. ZeroCircle photographs submitted to this project show both the beauty and ongoing destruction of the forests that belong to every citizen of this country. The goal of the ZeroCircles Project is to help end the senseless exploitation of public forests and restore their status as protected reserves as originally intended by Congress many years ago. ZeroCircles crafted by concerned people on our public lands can help catalyze this goal. The forests need your help!
